Project Description

University of Illinois
Armory Building

CHAMPAIGN, IL US 150,000 SF+

Originally conceived as a location for housing cadet military training in 1912, the historic Armory building on the campus of UIUC was considered the largest structure in the world without a center support. A multi-story addition was built around the building in 1926, adding classroom and office space.

Today, the Armory Building has many academic and athletic functions. As part of a phased approach to this project, TKB is developing a program to address building deficiencies. Then, a comprehensive design solution for the aging structure will improve corridors, wayfinding, student common areas and classrooms to develop a scheme that will unify and modernize the facility.
