Harold Washington College

The 350,000 square foot and eleven-story vertical campus, built in the late 1970's under severe budget limitations, exhibited some of the limitations that are familiar to most campuses: aging infrastructure, impediments to implementation of new technology, outmoded function of the college library and teaching facilities. Additionally, the urban college did not have informal areas for students to gather and meet which is an important facet of college life. The feasibility study proposed remedies and outlined costs for improvements to the building, limited to the area of the existing Loop facility.
