 TKB Welcomes New Team Member

Jessica Lopez began her first practical experience as a student intern at TKB.  After two semesters working in the firm part time, she completed her degree at the University of Illinois in Chicago. By mutual agreement, she stayed on as a full-time employee, working now on corporate offices and higher education projects.

“As an intern, a student has an opportunity to learn what it’s like to work at a firm and to get to know the team and they get to know you. After finishing my architectural degree my inner soccer fan took me to Brazil for the World Cup. I then came back to my new permanent position at TKB. I’m excited to be working with an experienced team on a substantive project where I can contribute and continue to learn,”  Jessica says.

nvTKB’s latest office design for the software design firm Trading Technologies was selected as one of Chicago’s coolest offices by Crain’s Chicago Business!  Even better, the winners were self-nominated, meaning the Trading Technologies workers themselves think it’s cool. Groundbreaking for Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center

groupTKB participated in the groundbreaking for a new building addition for the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center.  A longtime client, CCAC is a non-profit entity assisting children who have been sexually abused.  It provides coordination and counseling services, housing and linking, various law enforcement and government services entities that surround this issue.  The advocacy center’s management leads to less child trauma after the event, and a quicker path to recovery.  The project is managed by the Public Building Commission of Chicago, and partially funded by the City of Chicago, with additional fundraising by the CCAC.

TKB Supports Emerging Professionals Through Its Internship Program

In partnership with special programs through the University of Illinois and Harold Washington Colleges, TKB has engaged architecture student Jessica Lopez, now in her senior year at the University of Illinois, and Susana Balcazar, from the City Colleges’ accounting program.  Jessica’s internship was supported through a UIC grant, and Susana’s internship was supported in part through an Aon program for Harold Washington College’s top students.

Both students have demonstrated their value to the firm and have learned from the program.  According to Jessica:
“Becoming an intern at TKB has been a non-stop learning experience.  It has given me perspective on what it takes to do architecture as a profession.  It’s been great not only in terms of architecture but I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in projects in adjacent fields needed in the industry, this includes interior design, marketing, proposals, and learning the business aspect in general. I’ve become more excited and feel more ready and comfortable to start my practice after graduating!”  -Jessica Lopez
